As we were working towards our exhibition EMPÊTREMENT. One morning we woke up to the news of a natural disaster in Turkey and Syria.

Tens of thousands of people have been left homeless in freezing conditions after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated southern Turkey on Monday the 6th of February. The earthquake was followed by multiple aftershocks with the highest being of magnitude 7.5. Experts estimate over 31.974 deaths and 80.278 injured with more than 180,000 trapped under the rubble, waiting to be rescued. As UAL’s Turkish community, we are deeply saddened by the situation in our beloved country. We are launching the University of the Arts London Fundraiser to support the Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund run by Turkey Mozaik Foundation. We exist here today positioned in a Western world, miles away and minds away. It has been quite a struggle navigating this time as Turkish people, nevertheless, artists which exist within this space today have all put something on the table, on their plate in order to help. Unity. It has been an incredible image to see Turkish people sticking together, and new friends who have come to our aid along the way. Whereas there has naturally been so much division within the country and the world. Powerful. EMPÊTREMENT is emphasized here as a collective we have claimed the french word to more of what we are trying to exercise than the English word entanglement. We are EMPÊTREMENT in midst of the West. I am EMPÊTREMENT between these artists. We are EMPÊTREMENT all to our own homes. We feel therefore get EMPÊTREMENT within our bodies and minds. We invite you to EMPÊTREMENT with us and feel the unity of sticking up against these obstacles together. We invite you to donate and help the organization we are funding as UAL students. We also are curious to see what will be born from the unity of our participants. Draw your feelings after you have experienced our exhibition onto a piece of fabric that will be sewn into our carpet.
