The Earthshot Prize is the most prestigious global environment prize in history, designed to incentivise change and help repair our planet over the next ten years.
The Prize aims to turn the current pessimism surrounding environmental issues into optimism, by highlighting the ability of human ingenuity to bring about change, and inspiring collective action.
The EARTHSHOT Prize takes part of its name from former US President John F Kennedy's successful 'Moonshot' plan to land a spacecraft on the Moon in the 1960s.
Prince William and Sir David Attenborough have teamed up to launch this prize to inspire people to find solutions to save the planet. Each year for the next 10 years, 5 prices of £1 million will be awarded to help develop ideas that can repair the damage done to the environment and improve life for everyone.
Anyone can enter the awards, including schools, communities, governments and companies. The prizes will be awarded for the best ideas in 5 key areas.
Protecting and restoring nature
Cleaning the air
Reviving the oceans
Building a waste-free world
Fixing the climate
It is hoped the 50 ideas that are funded over the next decade will have a positive effect on the environment. The first prizes will be awarded in 2021.
